Home-Made & Non-Toxic Face Paint for Halloween

Hi Ladies,

I received an article about toxic face paints and thought I'd forward these healthier, non-toxic recipes for those who are going to be using face paint on thier children this Halloween. Even if face paint labels state that they are hypo-allergenic, that doesn't mean that they don't have various heavy metals in them. I hope you get a chance to try some of these... let me know how it goes! Have a great Halloween!!!

Face Paint and Halloween Makeup

To avoid heavy metals and other potentially harmful unknown ingredients in traditional Halloween face paint, try making your own using food-based ingredients. Remember, foods can cause allergies in some kids: always test your concoctions on a small patch of skin and read up on natural food colorings before sending your little ghouls out for a night of painted fun. And don’t forget that some foods can stain skin and clothes.

Face Paint Made with Natural Food Coloring
Natural food coloring is available at health food stores and typically derived from foods and spices. We recommend reading up about natural food colorings and potential allergies first. Do not substitute conventional food coloring, which may contain synthetic chemical ingredients.

Ingredients:

-Base of safe, unscented lotion (search Skin Deep for safe options) OR pure cocoa butter (available at health food stores) OR safe, mild toothpaste (search Skin Deep; avoid mint flavors, as they can make skin tingly)

-Natural food coloring (see note above)

Instructions:
Mix a few drops of natural food coloring into the base ingredient of your choice. Test on a small patch of skin before applying to face or body.

Face Paint Made with Food
Make sure young children understand they can’t eat these paints unless you make them without the base. Test a small patch of skin first to make sure your child isn’t allergic to the food you’re using.

Ingredients:

-Turmeric, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, beets, avocado, spirulina, cocoa, chocolate sauce, squid ink or other colorful foods, juices, herbs and spices

Instructions:

Yellow: Add 1/4 tsp. and a large pinch of stale turmeric to base.

Pink: Using a sieve, mash the juice from 3 fresh or thawed frozen raspberries, blackberries or beets directly into the base. Or, use a deeply colored berry juice or puree.

Mint green: With a fork, mash 1/4 of a small avocado until creamy. Mix this into your base.

Emerald green: Add small amount spirulina or bright green chlorophyll to base.

Purple: Using a sieve, mash the juice from several fresh or frozen blueberries into the base. Or, use blueberry juice.

Brown: Add cocoa powder or chocolate sauce to base.

Black: Use a small amount of squid ink in base for true black.

White: Mix powdered sugar and water.

Hello Dental Wives! I'd like to get together again and I love to read so I thought everyone else might like to as well. If you choose not to read it, still come! The book I have chosen is called 'Left to Tell' by Immaculee Ilibagiza

It's a short book - I read it quickly - and it seriously changed my life. We will be meeting May 15 at 10:30 to discuss the book. If there is a major conflict I am not aware of please let me know. I will put up questions to think about in a few days when I get a chance. My thought was to have the discussion at a park so that the kids could play while we talk. Does anyone know of a good park that would be perfect for this? I have a few ideas, but none are great. I hope we'll see you all soon!

Revamp the Wives Club!

So I really want to get together more often and on a regular basis. One of my friend's husband is in medical school back east and the wives get together a lot!! They have such fun ideas like auctions, craft night, cooking club, etc. Everyone is so talented and I know there is tons of things we could get together and do. So... to start out slow, I thought we could assign two days a month. One in the night for the wives that work and then one during the day for kid-friendly/stay-at-home during the day stuff (everyone is welcome to both of course!) I don't know if everyone is available for October so let me know what day/night of the week works best for you and what you would be interested in doing. This really will be so fun so let's get it started!

Here are a few of my ideas for adult activities:
-scrapbook night (bring a project you are working on and a treat!)
-card exchange (everyone makes x amount of cards and then everyone trades and you walk away with tons of new cards!)
-craft night (it would be fun to make a holiday craft together. I could show the example, everyone could sign up if they want to make it, I could buy the stuff, and then we can get together and make them.)
-recipe exchange (maybe again?)
-Auction night (Everyone brings a service/item they could auction off and then we all get a certain amount of little candies to bid on things.)
-movie night
-dessert or dinner night

Kid-friendly activities:
-Bounce U
-Lied Children's Museum
-Bellagio gardens and water fountains
-picnic and park
-swimming
-kid crafts
-Chuck E Cheese's or Peter Piper Pizza

So, please leave me a comment and let me know what you would be interested in and what day/night works best for you.

To get it started, I would prefer Monday or Friday days and Wednesday or Thursday nights.

For Twilight Fans!

As you Twilight fans may know, the movie is coming out on November 21st (which is a Friday). Me and some friends are getting together for dinner and then we're all going to the movie afterwards. It will be in North Las Vegas though so I'm not sure if that's convenient for everyone. I just thought I'd let you know... it's a great excuse to have a girls night out. Just let me know if you're interested. I don't have all the details yet because it is still a few months away but just a heads-up! Thanks, Mandy

We thought it would be fun to have a BBQ and do one last thing before school starts up. There is a really fun butterfly park up in the north west area of Las Vegas. It is on Buffalo and Elkhorn, at the Centennial Hills Park. We thought we could do it this Saturday May 10 around 4:30 or 5:00. They have a fun play ground area with slides and water, a covered BBQ area and sand volley ball. If everyone could bring their own meat and either a salad or desert that would be great! Hopefully everyone is back in town this weekend and can come. We haven't done anything for a while and it would be fun to all get together with our husbands and families!! If you could leave a comment on this blog if you are able to come and what you are going to bring so we don't have too much of one thing! Hope everyone has had a good break and can make it this weekend!!!

Treats for Finals

Sunset Park

Sorry for taking so long to follow up! So I was thinking that we could gather the husbands up this coming week and have a picnic/bbq since they will be home for spring break. I think it would work best if everyone brought their own meat and a side dish of some sort. If the husbands are not down with coming, I understand, I know that they are going to have to study really hard because finals are coming up, but I thought that maybe Wednesday would be good, that way they could have time to study at the beginning and at the end of the week with a nice break in between (and more people would have tome to see this post). I definently want to do it during the day because we never hang out when the sun is shining! So talk to your hubby's and get back to me. I will check for responses a couple times a day until Wednesday. So let me know if you have any ideas that you think will work better, what dish you plan on brining, and some ideas for time would be good too. I would like to do it closer to the early afternoon, around 11:00 am because the weather is so nice, but I know that probably doesn't work for everyone. Just let me know and I'll talk to you all later! (I'll include directions to the park once we have everything established)

Hey girls! I am in need of a good OBGYN. I know some of you are expecting, so hopefully you have found someone you like on this side of town. I am not thinking of getting pregnant any time soon, but I had some pretty major complication last time and I want to be prepared way ahead of time. Most of you have Medicaid right? That is why I am asking, because it is so hard to find a good dr. who takes medicaid! I would love to find someone I can trust!

Hello everyone!! I hope everyone had a great holiday break and the new semester is going well so far. I am always looking for new recipes so we thought it would be fun to have a recipe exchange get-together. Everyone can bring a couple of their favorite recipes- preferably main dish recipes- and we can trade with each other.

We have planned to have the recipe exchange at Camille Kinghorn's home at 2:00 pm. We wanted to know whether Wednesday January 23rd or Tuesday January 29th works best. Just thought I would say that it was fun to see a few of you at the dental school Christmas party last night! What a great break after a stressful week of finals huh? We are thinking of getting together with our spouses and everyone just bringing a Christmas treat to share. We can just hang out, maybe play a few games or something, maybe white elephant gifts? I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I am Jessica :) I am engaged to Cody Mugleston... I am in my Sr. year at Point Park University for dance in Pittsburgh, PA. Cody and I are getting married next summer and then I am moving out to Vegas!!! I cannot wait! I am so excited. Hey UNLV Dental Wives! Dental school is a long four years- let's make some memories! We thought it would be fun to make a dental wives club so we can keep busy with activities while they keep busy with school. To start, we would like to maybe have a once-a-month activity- first to get to know each other and second to have something to look forward to each month. We have a few ideas for activities but would love any input.

We think it would be great to have everyone be able to post on this blog. That way if you know of an activity or would like some company, you can post it here! In order to do that I need everyone's email addresses. If you send me your email address (karrissa@inpnet.org) I will add you as a contributor and then you can post on this blog. After receiving an email from Google, click on the link and it will tell you what to do.

As soon as we hear back from some people we will announce when and where our first activity will be. Thanks so much and we are excited to get to know all of you!
